Help! This sushi is too big!

Sushi Hand Roll

A common misconception among non-Japanese sushi lovers is that sushi is meant to be eaten in one bite. But it is not mandatory with all sizes of sushi.

Different sizes of Sushi

Yes! sushi comes in different sizes. Depending on the quantity of ingredients used and preparation style, sushi could be;
Futomaki Roll
A Futomaki Roll - is 2 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter and contains a large quantity of ingredients. This is a very large roll and cannot be eaten in one bite and one should not attempt to do so either. Futomaki rolls are usually made on special occasions and festivals in Japan, because of which they come in more variety of flavours. It is perfectly acceptable to eat a Futumaki in 2 to 3 bites. Examples include; Chicken Tori Karaage Roll.
 
A Chumaki Roll: Spicy Tuna
A Chumaki Roll - is 1 1/2 inches in diameter and has 2 to 3 or sometimes even 4 ingredients contributing to it's size. This is a very common type of sushi toll and examples include Spicy Tuna Roll, California Roll or a Spicy Salmon Roll.
Hosomaki Roll: Plum Cucumber
A Hosomaki Roll - is about 1 inch in diameter and has 1 ingredient in it. This is light sushi ideal for a snack. Examples include; Tuna Roll or Plum Cucumber Roll.
Temaki Prawn Tempura Roll
There is one other type of sushi roll that is not cut into pieces but eaten as a whole, like a Shawarma. Known as a Temaki or Hand Roll. For Example; Tempura Prawn & Cucumber Roll.
